For my argument essay I am currently planning on using the issue of deforestation, specifically in the Brazilian rainforest. I am obviously against deforestation and my essay is an attempt to argue that point to the best of my ability. I think deforestation should be halted in order to better preserve the biodiversity of the Amazon. Deforestation leads to the destruction of ecosystems and all of their inhabitants. It also destroys various sorts of trees, which greatly contribute to oxygen in our atmosphere and hold significant historical value as well. My sources come from a variety of organizations and articles, some of which I am surprised I found. I want to use a few National Geographic articles along with online publications from a couple organizations, one of which is Greenpeace. There is also a government site through NASA that has an article pertaining to the destruction of forests. I have yet to do a background check on some of my sources, but I think government websites (NASA) are credible without looking deeply into their background.
The topic of deforestation is timely because it is still an ongoing process that has irreversible effects on the planet and the people of this planet. When I refer to deforestation I am referring to human driven deforestation, such as logging, not natural deforestation caused by the inevitable processes of erosion and forest fires. People know deforestation exists, but most of us do not know the extent to which it is carried out and the dramatic effect it has on the planet. I believe if society is better informed of the problem people will work harder to counteract it or maybe at least consider using products of deforestation more efficiently. I want to write this paper to convince people to take somewhat a stand against the deforestation of the Brazilian rain forest and acknowledge that human deforestation is a problem that plagues countries across the globe. The connection I feel with my topic is one of observation. I have been increasingly more aware of the problem and do not wish to see it continue in the manner it is being carried out. I greatly desire to see the Amazon and I would not want to see the barren wasteland of roots and dirt it is becoming.
